For my quality project, I wanted to do something having to do with sustainability or helping out the planet. However, at the same time, I wanted my project to be fun and enjoyable to do. Therefore, for my quality project, I am taking old clothes and remaking it into something people would actually wear. For example, I would take and old dress my mom’s had stashed her closet for years not wearing, and remake it into a dress or shirt someone would wear now. This would include me sewing and cutting the fabric to make it ore wearable in this decade. By doing this, I would be flowing with the idea of sustainability as well as reusing and recycling old clothes that nobody would wear.
Why:
This was my original idea for my quality project, but when I first started out, I decided to learn how to play the guitar instead. As the weeks floated past, it got harder and harder for me to whip out my guitar and practice, because I wasn’t having fun learning how to play the guitar. It was hard for me to move my fingers fast and catch every note along the way. Therefore, I switched my quality project back to my original idea of remaking old clothes. I’ve always had an interest in sewing and had taken sewing lessons for a couple years in middle school. I knew I had the skill, but I wanted to put it to the test. With no patterns to follow or teachers to tell me what to do, I would be on my own. This is a challenge for me to be able to sew clothes that look presentable using nothing other than my own imagination. I need to think on my toes when problems arise and ultimately know what I am doing throughout it all.
How:
To make the clothing new again, I will need a sewing machine and a surger, to keep the edges from fraying, all of which I have at home. Also, all the tools I need for sewing, including pins, a tape measure, and scissors I also have at home from when I used to take sewing classes. To document my quality project, I am making and continually journaling in my blog at
Quality:
Remaking old clothes exemplifies all the characteristics of quality. It is accurate and specific because you need to pay special attention to how everything looks and how it is sewn because it is something someone will wear out in public. If I am not careful and double-check my work, it will look sloppily done and the seams will be all over the place. This is significant to me because I want to eventually have a career in the fashion business and so this will help me to advance and show off my skills through creating new clothes. This has breadth because I am able to sew the clothes into whatever designs I want to. Therefore, it also has some of my personality in it as well. Depth can be seen through how much effort and the amount of time I take in doing each dress. It can also be seen in how intricate and precise my work is, which goes back to specificity and accuracy of my work.
